Back to Practice Plans

Time Drill
5 Min Active Stretching
  • Orange Ball Ground ball into X v X
10 Min Saint Drill - Two over the shoulder passes each time a player goes (go all right handed, then all left handed)

Start with 4 lines 15-20 yards on each side of the middle of the goal and top of the box Two Goalies in the middle of both lines balls start down low, passes to same side high, passes to the goalie, runs up field catches from goalie over the shoulder and then passes to the top left, top left passes down to bottom left

10 Min Shell Drill - Coach Nat St. Laurent

Goal of Drill: The defense is working on their footwork and approach to the ball. You can incorporate your scouting reports into this drill and practice taking away what your opponents want to accomplish.

  • 5 v 4 or 5 v 5
  • two guys down low, guy on crease, two guys up top
  • Move the ball, defense adjusts and returns to the hole, always cover the crease
  • No shooting, if goalie he adjusts

10 Min Dodge to X, Catch and Shoot
  • 3 Lines, balls top right, Line rightside X, Line left wing
  • Dodge down the alley, pass to X, redirect other side, cut and feed to 3rd guy who takes a step down shot
15 Min 5 Man Clear into 3v2

Teaches clearing the ball and transitions into 3v2

  • Need 5 players and a goalie
  • Setup 3 cones near the midfield line, 2 at the hash marks 1 in the center
  • 2 Players are at the hash mark at GLE, 3 players are on the cones up top.
  • Goalie clears to a GLE side, then pass to hash midfield side, then the middle
  • As soon as the ball is in the middle, the drill turns into 3v2
  • Midfield players play on offense vs 2 defenders
  • Variation: Have the defense clearing redirect it via a 40 yard pass across the field or back to the goalie

10 Min 3 on 3 Add One Back Cut Drill
  • http://www.laxpower.com/laxnews/news.php?story=31679&page=1
  • 3 defenders and 4 offense
  • 2 lines defenders on one side of GLE, 1 on the other. 3 lines of attack behind the goal, 1 line at the midline
  • The drill begins with a ground ball or a pass, and we play 3v3 for 5 to 10 seconds. Then the coach might yell out, "add one," and the fourth offensive player enters the drill, usually from the back of the defenders.
  • We play to a shot. On a shot or save, we immediately clear and then begin the drill again with new players.
  • Alternative is to run from the top by switching the placement of the lines.

15 Min 6 on 6 - Double Jump

This drill is used to help a kid get rid of the ball when they are double and triple teamed.

  • 12 players are needed for the drill (6 offense, 6 defense)
  • The offense attempts to move the ball around, with adjacent cutting out for help and the rest cutting and returning for the ball the coach calls out a name on defense, and that defenseman doubles the ball.
  • If two numbers are called, then its a triple team
  • The offensive player whose man runs for the double turns and cuts towards the goal for a pass
  • The offensive players closest to the double move towards the ball circling for assistance
  • The offensive player who gets doubled looks up for the cutting player or the adjacent player who is providing him assistance and makes a pass

Note: We may want to have 1 or 2 coaches play defense and provide the double, to kick start the action.

Variation: Have the player with the ball start at the midline and slide to double or triple with the two top defenders.

10 Min Patton Drill

Works on Ground Balls and unsettled situations

  • Split kids into 2 teams
  • The drill can be run with 2, 4, 6, 8, or 10 players
  • Put a team on each side of the box at the top of the box
  • Put a goalie in net
  • Roll a ball out and kids fight for the ball
  • The winning team is on offense and gets another player added
  • The GB losing team must play with a man down, creating an unsettled situation
  • Players play until a goal or a clear
