Time Drill

60 Min Hogan Pace of Practice Passing Drills

Goal is to get a ton of touches with a high amount of engagement in a short period of time

  • Drill 1: Star Drill (two or three balls)
  • Drill 2: Star Drill with Shooting line 5 (top of star) can shoot or pass to line 1 (balls start at line 1)
  • Drill 3: Saint Drill - Two over the shoulder passes each time a player goes (go all right handed, then all left handed)
    • Start with 4 lines 15-20 yards on each side of the middle of the goal and top of the box
    • Two Goalies in the middle of both lines
    • balls start down low, passes to same side high, passes to the goalie, runs up field catches from goalie over the shoulder and then passes to the top left, top left passes down to bottom left
  • Drill 4: Four Corners - Over the shoulder passing (all right, all left, catch right throw left, catch left throw right)
    • Goalies in the middle with balls
    • 4 corners 15-20 lines out
    • 2 balls, goalies follow the ball, if the ball gets dropped the goalie passes a new ball to the next guy in line
  • Drill 5: Buckeye Drill - teaches kids to scoop the ball on the run and make two quick passes (Ground Ball - Pass - Pass), one craddle then throw, rotate lines
    • Make 3 lines of kids with the outside lines being 10 yards apart (and two goalies in the middle) for 5 total guys
    • Put the balls in the middle with two goalies to the outside of the outside lines
    • Roll a ball out, have the middle guy scoop it up, pick a side to throw to, and then throw to the other guy
    • Last guy with the ball circles or question mark and then passes to a goalie and we repeat
  • Drill 6: Buckeye Drill with Shooting - goalies join the lines and coaches roll the ball out
  • Drill 7 Help Drill - Non contact GB with a chaser and an outlet
    • Line the guys up in a single file line, add two goalies 20 yards away and 15 yards out on the side
    • Coach in the middle opposite end with balls, rolls a GB to
    • Scooper gets the ball, C curls to his butt end, chaser providers a little pressure, helper goes to his butt hand side
    • Helper passes to the goalie on the side and goalie rolls it back to the coach
    • Scooper runs to, through, then away
  • Drill 8: Sideline Drill - fight for a GB near the sideline
    • Stand near a sideline, have a coach be 2 feet outside the line with balls
    • two lines of kids about 3 yards from the sideline and goalies on either side of the lines about 10 yards away and behind by 5
    • Coach puts the ball down, the kids compete for the ball, without going out of bounds, and then the winner passes to the goalie
  • Drill 9: 3 v 2 Drill - Constant 3v2 with a goalie, positions don't matter the drill never stops
    • One defensive line in the back, 3 offensive lines up top
    • Coach drops a ball at the middle line and it goes
    • One whistle and we start the next play, no waiting
    • The last guy to touch the ball on offense becomes a defender with the one defender coming in
    • The last guy on offense can't forget to play defense (this helps get over thinking how did I miss the goal). If this guy forgets, the whole team must do 5 pushups per miss at the end
  • Drill 10: 3 v 2 Sideways - 3 offensive and 2 defensive lines - one whistle starts the play, one whistle stops the play, look to get to the middle to shoot
  • Drill 11: 2 v 1 Drill - use tennis or swaxlax balls and a goalie
    • Roll a ball in, its a 2v1, with guys all next to each other
    • offense wins they go to goal, defense gets it and they run the ball out of play
  • Drill 12: Z Approaches with a Ground Ball
    • Put 5 cones in a Z pattern, approach, and drop step, at then end coach rolls a gb to
  • Drill 13: Gretsky Drill 4v4
    • Goalie, 4v4 up top, 2 feeders down low
    • Variation: Add 1 defensive guy down low
  • Drill 14: Spoke passing drill
  • Cone in the middle, with 4 cones about 10-15 yards away
  • Kids pile in middle, pop-out receive pass catch on outside, switch hands and pass to the next guy popping out



10 Min 3v2 to 4v3
  • Setup 3 lines of dark and 2 lines of white behind the cage
  • Out of bounds up top is the box line
  • Coach throws a ball to the dark line
  • Defense and Offense play 3v2
    • Offense sets up in a triangle with a guy at x
  • Once a shot, turnover or goal happens, coach passes the ball to one of the two white players behind
  • Then the 3 dark players are on defense and the 4 white players are on offense
    • Offense sets up in a box



7 Min 3 v 3
20 Min 5 v 5 or 10 v 10 Scrimmage
  1. Every player interested in facing off gets a chance to do multiple face-offs.
  2. The teams must be even, so if it is lopsided, switch some players from each team.
  3. Attack and defenders need to be mixed, not just with the same partners.
  4. Feature a lot of rides, clears, and face offs.
