50 Min Hogan Pace of Practice Passing Drills

Goal is to get a ton of touches with a high amount of engagement in a short period of time

  • Drill 1: Star Drill with Shooting line 5 (top of star) can shoot or pass to line 1 (balls start at line 1)
  • Drill 2: Saint Drill - Two over the shoulder passes each time a player goes (go all right handed, then all left handed)
    • Start with 4 lines 15-20 yards on each side of the middle of the goal and top of the box
    • Two Goalies in the middle of both lines
    • balls start down low, passes to same side high, passes to the goalie, runs up field catches from goalie over the shoulder and then passes to the top left, top left passes down to bottom left
  • Drill 3: 3 v 2 Drill - Constant 3v2 with a goalie, positions don't matter the drill never stops
    • One defensive line in the back, 3 offensive lines up top
    • Coach drops a ball at the middle line and it goes
    • One whistle and we start the next play, no waiting
    • The last guy to touch the ball on offense becomes a defender with the one defender coming in
    • The last guy on offense can't forget to play defense (this helps get over thinking how did I miss the goal). If this guy forgets, the whole team must do 5 pushups per miss at the end
  • Drill 4: Alley Shooting with Swaxlax
    • Have offensive and defensive guy, defensive guy starts in the hole, approaches takes away inside, forces down the alley
    • offensive guy shoots and sometimes tries to go to the inside
  • Drill 5: Gretsky Drill 4v4
    • Goalie, 4v4 up top, 2 feeders down low
    • Variation: Add 1 defensive guy down low
  • Drill 6: Time & Room Shooting
20 Min Offensive Concepts
  • Exchange (Starts a play)
    • Drill: 6 man backside exchange while swinging a ball
  • Dodge/Draw/Dump - Throw towards Pressure
    • Drill: Swaxlax 3v3 or 4v4, into 6v6
      • Offense moves the ball in north/south east/west fashion and dodges
      • Defense slides early, can only shoot if offense makes a pass where pressure comes from
      • If you are 2 or 3 passes away from where the dump is going to happen drag your defender away to create space
      • Objective is to create time and room with hands free for a shooter
      • If 2 or 3 passes away, look to seal pick to prevent 2nd slide
      • If dodging look at the sliding defenders body signs, if leaning forward you got the pass
