RDU U9 Practice Plan 6 to 8PM

Minutes Drill Information
6:00 to 6:05 Stickers
6:05 to 6:25 Rhythm passing drill
  • Use 5 cones
  • Setup the cones in a box with a middle cone. Off the middle cone we go 6-10 yards out
  • Kids stand on the middle cone, cut towards a cone and receive the pass
  • Catch on the outside, cradle, turn and make the pass


6:25 to 6:40 Faceoffs into 6 on 6
  • Which ever color wins the faceoff plays offense
6:40 to 6:45 Water
6:45 to 7:00

Station 1: Attack and half middies

Triangle Offense Drill When you don't have the ball move your feet. Move without the ball, make the give and go, and maintain the triangle.

  • 3 person drill
  • Setup 4 cones, 1 near top box, 2 at the sides, 1 behind
  • Keep motion around the cones, someone can cut to the goal for the give and go
  • Kids keep playing until coach says shoot.
  • Emphasis on going around the net and always having two outlets for the players


Station 2: Defense and half middies

  • Backpedal with wooden dowel drill
7:00 to 7:05 Water
7:05 to 7:30 Tic Toc (5 v 5)
  • Defense runs clockwise inside the crease, offense runs counter-clockwise outside the crease
  • If you dont have a goalie, put a bag in the goal players must hit bag with shot
  • offense eyes on the ball when running
  • offensive players must pass the ball twice off every ground ball (ground ball-pass-pass)
  • Adjacent need to create space for an easy pass-pass outlet
  • As the offense gets possession they must have an easy target on each side of the player who gained possession. Offensive players need to immediately recognize and react to be the adjacent.
  • Attack the cage after the second pass
  • Following the shot, defense clears the ball to the midline and next groups rotate in


7:30 to 7:35 Water
7:35 to 7:55 Hippo Drill 8v8

  • Divide kids into teams
  • On field its 8v8 running a 2-3-2
  • You have 20 seconds to clear and 10 seconds to get it in the box
  • Start with a face-off and after each goal we do a face-off
  • Once a team gains possession a player can run with the ball only for 3-5 seconds. Then the player must pass the ball to a teammate.
  • Focus is on quick passes
  • If the player with the ball fails to pass in 3-5 seconds, the coach blows the whistle and possession changes
