  • 3 defenders and 4 offense
  • 2 lines defenders on one side of GLE, 1 on the other. 3 lines of attack behind the goal, 1 line at the midline
  • The drill begins with a ground ball or a pass, and we play 3v3 for 5 to 10 seconds. Then the coach might yell out, "add one," and the fourth offensive player enters the drill, usually from the back of the defenders.
  • We play to a shot. On a shot or save, we immediately clear and then begin the drill again with new players.
  • Alternative is to run from the top by switching the placement of the lines.

20 Min 2 v 1 Box Build Up

  • Drill starts as a 2v1 ground ball and goes into a 4 on 4
  • start with goalie and 1 defender in the hole
  • At corner of the box, have 2 offensive lines, and 1 defensive. Roll the ground ball with the defender always trailing
  • Goes as 2v1 (2v2), 3v3, 4v4
5 Min Water
10 Min Cabrini Hub Drill to 4V4

A great drill that is done in two phases. The first phase is used for defensive positioning and footwork, and offense swinging the ball around the goal. The second phase turns into a 4v4 with offensive players working on specific techniques.

  • Put a goalie in cage, add 4 cones around the goal in a diamond shape
  • Divide teams up with attack and some middies on one team, defense and some middies on the other. Spread these players around the field at the cones
  • Phase 1 of the Drill - Defensive Footwork
    • The offense looks to swing the ball around the goal, they must stay in their cone zone
    • As the ball is passed to the offensive guy, the defender sprints towards his man applies pressure. Defenders accelerate and arrive under control, using toe to heel transition. The defender can check the hands of the offensive guy, who is pretty much locked to his zone
    • When the ball is passed, that defender very quick moves or recovers back into the hole
    • Defensive Coaching: Approach, Break Down, Toe to Heel weight transfer, arrive with check, recover back to the hole
  • Phase 2 of the Drill - 4v4 with offensive techniques - Coach initiates phase 2 with a whistle blow
    • The offensive players begin in the diamond formation and we add techniques or little rules to the play
    • Offensive Coaching Must Begin: Invert Middies, Pass Down - Pick Down, Aggressive drive to the cage, Off Ball Pick, Isolate the short stick defender, Create picks to force short stick vs attack

20 Min 5 v 5 or 10 v 10 Scrimmage
  1. Every player interested in facing off gets a chance to do multiple face-offs.
  2. The teams must be even, so if it is lopsided, switch some players from each team.
  3. Attack and defenders need to be mixed, not just with the same partners.
  4. Feature a lot of rides, clears, and face offs.
10 Min John Hopkins 3v2 Challenge

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivm2d55bOY8

Great competition drill that teaches soft hands on offense and quick ball movement.

  • Have the kids split up with dark vs light
  • Have each team run for 5 minutes in offense and defense and keep track of who wins
  • Setup 5 cones around the goal, the cones are in a star pattern with the top of the star at the top of the goal about 10 yards away
  • Have the defense on the back 2 cones behind the net
  • Have the offense on the top 3 cones
  • Place a goalie in the net and use tennis balls
  • Coach throws a ball to an offensive player and it turns into a 3v2
  • Defense has to adjust to the man and talk to stop the ball from going in the net

The losing team has to do extra pushups or sprints
