Crossfire Passing

A good drill to reinforce two passes and 2 man game

  • Create a square about 15 yards by 15 yards
  • Have 4 kids per team for a total of 8 players
  • For each team, put 2 guys on the outside and 2 guys in the inside
  • The outside guys are on opposite sides of the square and cannot go inside the square
  • The inside guys are free to roam in the middle area
  • Start with the ball on the outside, make a pass or two into the middle and then to the other side
  • If through the middle and out the other side, you gain one point
  • If the ball is loose in the middle players fight for the ball
  • If the ball rolls out, it starts with the team on the line where the ball goes out
  • Try to string together multiple points

Station 2 - Ground Ball Theme

Beginner Drill

Individual Ground Balls

  • Both Butts low
  • Roll the ball away from kids, question mark, pass back to coach
  • Scoop with resistance (coach holds stick over the ball)

Intermediate Drill

Round Up

A great drill that allows for many touches with ground balls and provides a competitive relay race for kids.

  • Divide kids into 4 equal groups
  • Place 4 cones at equal distance away from a center point
  • At the center point, drop all your balls, 20+ balls recommended
  • Have your kids line up on the 4 cones
  • Blow the whistle and the kids run into middle to get ground balls and run back to their starting cone
  • When the player scooping the ball returns past the cone, the next player goes
  • Any ball racked, must be dropped, players can only scoop up one ball at a time
  • Note: Variation is to have coaches in the middle checking kids sticks

Expert Drill

4 Man Ground Ball into a 3v3

This drill was invented by Paul Myers. The goal of the drill is to reward the player who wins the ground ball with the opportunity to play offense. Defensively, this drill helps players drop back to the hole quickly and to find a man to cover.

  • Put a goalie in the net
  • Have 4 lines of guys at equal distance around the box (one line in each corner)
  • Have 2 additional lines of guys, one on each side of the box, in between the 4 guys fighting for the ball
  • The coach rolls the ball out, the 4 lines battle for the ground ball. The winner of the ground ball must break out, protecting the stick and the 3 guys that lose are now on defense
  • Upon possession, 1 guy from each of the middle lines runs out, and is on offense with the winner of the ground ball and the drill transitions into a 3v3
