Jamie Munro Season in a Box
Every concept / drill you need to have a great season!
- free play - Figure out how to read and influence the game
- feed the cats - Tony Holler
- creating game-like practice environments
- principles based lacrosse, both sides of the ball
- the drills
Free Play
- Free play really helps the kids get creative
Feed the cats, Tony Holler - track coach
- Sprint don't run, Quality > Quantity
- Perform in practice, moderate exercise never leads to extreme performance
- Eliminate conditioning, do it in practice
- Alternate "high" and "low" practices
Create Game-Like Environments
- Use drills that are in context for the game, for example 1v1 is too easy. West Genny is fun, but not context
- Find a balance, should be 3v3 to 6v6 or full field game
- Make things competitive, nothing is more game like than letting the kids win or lose, don't stop the play, correct after the play
- Play out the 6v6 until the whistle, play to a clear
- Exceptions to game-like environments
- Warmups and passing and catching
- Defensive type communication
Principles based Offense
- Possession - take care of the ball and maintain control
- Passing - ball movement, assisted shots score at a higher percentage
- Picking - pick on/off ball concurrently, seals, picks, slips
- Spacing - Stay out of the middle, gives the defense an anchor to slide from
- Reads - Reading the defense, are they coming or staying
Skill Development
- Passing / catching
- Keep Away
- 4v3
- 5v5
- Shooting on a goalie (tennis balls)
- 2 Man from behind
- Free Play
- Teach skills with lots of reps in drills, let them learn via free play and review with video
Drill: 4 v 4 free play box like
- off ball and on ball picks
- Goalie in smaller net
- Can use tennis balls
Defensive Principles
- Ball pressure and how we guard the ball
- Approaches
- reading the quality of defense on ball - what's the reads,
- off ball posture - be sideways
- communication
Gerry Byrne - Defensive Wizards
Defensive Drills
- defense is on the other end of the field, doing defensive stuff
- Do 1v1 z drills, offensive guy with his back to the defender, in possessions mode
Drill: 3 v 2 starts with an approach, 3rd dodge we start to double
- offense is in a triangle, two guys in the middle
- Approach while they pass and then dodge, on the 3rd dodge we double
Drill: DVR Drill
- ?
Drill: Gerry Byrne Shed Drill'
- 3 v 3 without a goal, two guys up top, one in the crease (each with a defender)
- Offense does alot of picks and 2 man game
- Slide decisions, offense and defense doesn't play 100%, try to get a chunk, but make opportunities for sliding decisions
- Slide, Recover, Communicate
Drill: Survivor
- 3 v 3, one guy at x, two guys up top
- Start with an alley dodge
- Force the slide, second slide, recover
- Ball gets to X, Slide and double, etc
- Teach the defenders how to get beat and recover
- Play at 3 quarters speed
Offense, Crease follow the dodger or float for the top guy to recover
Drill: 4 v 4 with a feeder in the back
- Dodge down the alley, defense plays 3/4 speed, work on slide, 2nd slide, recover
Drill: 2 v 1 buildup and second rep of 5 v 4
- Offense must score 4 goals to win
- Offense has 5 chances to score 4 goals
Drill: Unsettled fast break
- 3 v 3 attack/defense
- Ball carrier to the right, chaser to the right, when the hit the box, the other 4 middies jump in
- Forces a fast break and the chaser to get the top point man's guy
Drill: Rotate a 6 v 5 with man down to pretend man to man
- Helps the defense force slides, recovers
Drill: 6v6 Build Up
- 1v1 + Picker - Do a 1 v 1 but with a picker, put a goalie in goal
- When defender goes under the pick shoot
- 3v3 on the side, always have a guy on the side getting a pass, he feeds, shoot on the picks or feed
- 4v4 from behind, with a shortened box line for out of bounds
- Offense must give 3 passes before scoring
- Offense gets 3 runs, if they score 2 they win, if they score 1 they tie
- 5v5 from behind, with a 15 yard restraining line
- 5v5 with an X guy that can't score
- 6v6: Pick onball/offball concurrently, if you don't set the picks, a 15 second shot clock is on
