Lars Tiffany Defensemen Pre-Practice

Things to do before you scrimmage or go full field, balance of footwork and technique

  • Communication, approaches, sliding
  • 2 Min of fundamental for the whole team
  • 15-18 Min of breaking out to Face offs, Defense, Offense, Goalies

Defense Warmup

Do ladder work


Drill: Hands Drill - Coaches points left/right/back with 4 guys out to do the footwork, then coach rolls a ball out, the pickup the ball flip to the next guy, then approach, get the stick on the bottom hand on the approach

  • Defense does the lateral footwork with the stick in front of them


Five on a Die

Drill: Five on a die - 5 guys together, 1 guy pretends he's getting a guy down the alley, beat top side, slide and adjust for the rest of the guys


Drill: 4 Man down the field Picks, get under, double, switch, over

  • Purpose is to work on communication and repetition


53 Defensive Drill

Drill: 53 Drill

  • Two guys are on offense are unguarded on the top of the diamond
  • two guys on offense form the outside of the diamond
  • one offensive guy on the crease
  • Three defensemen cover the middle 3 guys in the diamond


Drill: Upfield Breakouts with goalies passing


General Notes

  • The womans 11 meter arch is called the red zone, anyone off ball gets into the red zone, ball guy can go out and pressure
  • 5 Categories of training: footwork, stickwork, scheme work, communication, challenge (offense has a stick and you don't and have to be a db covering a receiver)
  • Lars gets new defenders and they are shocked on how much they are asked for to learn.
  • Work with multiple slide packages, invert defense, zone defense
  • Teaches his defense, stick out, pokes, and lifts (no slaps)
