Notes from Duke Lacrosse Coaches Clinic
From Lacrosse Plan Drills
Below are notes from the Duke Lacrosse Coaches clinic for 2016
11/1/2016 Meeting Notes
- Bear Bryant Locker Room Speech to incoming freshmen, talking about giving your all on gameday and your all only comes with preparation throughout the season at practice. If you quit in practice then you will quit in the 4th quarter.
- Goal to score 30-35% of the time when we have possession
- Build team goals, for example 85% efficiency when clearing the ball (17/20). A clear stat is clearing from box to box.
- Engage parents that want to be involved and let them take stats
- Good practice to have your team echo the calls, for example "Zero"
- Good practice to have kids acknowledge the kid that gave you an assist
- Talk with your coaches to figure out what to say in the Post Game Talk. What the message we want to give
- When playing defense look at covering with Chest/Back principle on the transistion. If you see chest move towards players near the guy passing, if you see back pinch to the crease
- Good practice to have your long poles scoop and defend with both hands
Clearing Talk
- Clear the ball two ways (Live Ball and Dead Ball)
- If you are tired, clear the ball then sub out
- Its always good to remember when you are clearing the ball, its 7 vs 6, relax you have time
- When practicing clears, start with people in the paint, like they just played defense
- You can practice full field skeleton or with 10 v 10
- In Practice issues commands like redirect or over the top
- Middies should break out and receive the pass over their outside shoulder
- Quick Strike clear is to lookup to a fast middie and make a quick pass
- One mistake players make during clears are middies never come back to the ball. Have them runs straight to the ball, as they can make more athletic moves
Riding Talk
- Can do a goalie free ride, which is to cover feet to feet everyone but the goalie. Do this when you have a non-athletic goalie, call it "match feet"
